Photovoltaics and Solar Cell Technologies: New Trends, Efficiency Improvements, and Their Role in Renewable Energy Sources

Photovoltaics (PV) and renewable energy sources (RES) are the focus of attention of many leading research centres worldwide, including Germany, France, Japan, China, the USA, and Taiwan. The European Union is progressively transitioning away from fossil fuel-based energy systems, making PV one of the fastest-growing renewable energy sectors. Within the lecture, photovoltaics will be discussed in the context of its role in RES, with particular emphasis on recent technological developments and efficiency improvements in solar cell technologies. Current trends such as advanced silicon-based cells, as well as emerging perovskite-based tandem cells, will be briefly introduced. Additionally, the development and application of solar cells in the photovoltaic industry in Poland and worldwide will be presented.

Using solar energy for gasification of solid organic matter

Solar gasification is a thermochemical process for converting biomass into synthesis gas (H2 + CO) using concentrated solar power (CSP) as a high-temperature heat source. Unlike traditional methods, solar energy is converted into chemical energy, significantly increasing the calorific value of the resulting gas fuel. The technology eliminates the combustion of feedstock part, reduces CO2 emissions, and produces a clean product free of combustion impurities.
